David M. Bagley papers.

This collection consists of various papers of David M. Bagley, his family being from Adams Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan. The collection includes two letters, one from Morgan Bates to Bagley, dated Jan. 30, 1860, and the other from Bagley to his father, David Bagley. The collection also contains a volume of correspondence to and from David M. Bagley, dating 1836-1838, and a composition book, dating 1832-1843, which includes essays on rechartering the Bank of the United States, inspirational essays, his critique of organized religion, and letters between Bagley and his father on religion.

In 1816, the Bank of the United States was rechartered, the first charter having expired in 1811, in an attempt to stabilize the national currency. Within the first three years, the bank was nearly ruined due to mismanagement. Langdon Cheves was elected president of its board of directors in 1819 and restored the bank's credit.
